The Moment We Are In

Why Consciousness, Why Now

Everyone is talking about consciousness. The reason is artificial intelligence.

The moment machines began performing tasks we believed required a mind, an old question resurfaced with new urgency: what is consciousness, actually? And the answer emerging from neuroscience is striking.

Consciousness and intelligence are not the same thing. They operate through different systems in the brain. Intelligence adapts, solves, produces. It can be measured, replicated, and now automated. Consciousness is the felt experience of being alive. It is what it is like to see, to grieve, to understand, to sit in complete stillness and know that you exist.

A machine can outperform you at almost any task. But it will never know what it is like to be alive.

The implications are hard to overstate. A technology that outperforms us at everything we do is not a future scenario. It is arriving now. And it raises a question most of us are not prepared for: if doing is no longer what makes us valuable, then what does?

The answer is in consciousness. In the one dimension of human existence that cannot be automated, optimized, or replaced. In capacities so fundamental to who we are that we have overlooked them entirely. Until now.

The School of Consciousness is a 9-month training designed to help you understand consciousness, experience it, and develop it.

The Promise

What You Will Develop

The ability to meet your own consciousness directly, at will

You have been conscious every moment of your life, and you have almost certainly never been shown how to contact that consciousness on purpose. The school changes that through classical meditation, subtle body work, and guided exploration of awareness itself. You leave with the lived capacity to distinguish awareness from its contents, to rest in it deliberately, and to draw on it when the conditions of your life demand more than your usual mind can give.

The ability to distinguish consciousness from intelligence

Neuroscience has confirmed what the mystics always knew: these are entirely different systems. Intelligence performs. Consciousness experiences. Once you can feel the difference inside yourself, the distinction stops being a concept and starts shaping how you think, how you listen, and how you decide. It is one of the most useful capacities a human being can develop, and almost no one is taught it.

An understanding of consciousness that no single discipline can provide

Where neuroscience, philosophy, and the world's great contemplative traditions converge, a picture of consciousness appears that none of them can offer alone. This school brings all three into one conversation

Access to capacities that only a conscious being can have

As awareness deepens, capacities emerge that no machine can replicate: holding complexity without fragmenting, perceiving what is unsaid, and responding from a depth that precedes thought. These capacities cannot be taught as ordinary skills. They emerge directly from a consciousness that has been trained.

A Personal Invitation

Why We Created This School

Dear friend,

Consciousness may be the hardest problem we have. The philosopher David Chalmers calls it exactly that: “the hard problem.” With all our science, we still cannot explain this inner experience we each carry, the sense of being inside the world and somehow outside it at once. What makes it so difficult is that consciousness is the very thing doing the studying. It is more than something we have. It is what we are.

For most of history, this was a question for philosophers and mystics. Today, it has become a question for everyone. The rise of AI has produced machines that behave in startlingly humanlike ways, and suddenly everyone is asking whether they might be conscious. The confusion exists precisely because we still do not understand consciousness deeply enough. And there is a subtler reason: many of us have stopped feeling consciousness, the capacity to experience, to know directly, to be.

So I have decided that the next annual school I will guide, together with Tamar Brosh, will be devoted entirely to the depths and mysteries of consciousness. There are too few spaces like this: approaches that bring philosophy, neuroscience, mysticism, and meditation into one room, while developing insight alongside experience and theory alongside practice. Because if we fail to cultivate both, the day may come when we are drowning in the AI ocean, no longer able to tell the difference between being conscious and being mechanical, between experiencing and merely talking about experience.

Consciousness is more than a concept to analyze. Above all, it is something to be. It is what it feels like to be you.

I invite you, with all my heart, to join these nine months. For me, this school gathers everything I have explored, in the academic world and in the realm of the mystic.

Shai Tubali,
Ph.D.

Dear friend,

For more than twenty years I have sat with people in the work of expanding consciousness, sometimes in moments of profound stillness, sometimes in the most sacred territory a human being can enter. What I have learned is that consciousness is flexible and unlimited, and when it opens, there is no end to the wonders one can discover. For it to open and reveal itself fully, it needs the right conditions and the right methods.

My work in this school is to hold those conditions with you. The teaching that Shai brings is rigorous, and it is meant to be lived. My care is that you do live it: that the distinctions land in your body, that the practices change something real in how you meet your own life, and that the consciousness we speak about becomes something you can actually feel, return to, and trust.

I am looking forward to walking these nine months with you.
With warmth,

Tamar Brosh,
M.A.

The School

Nine Weekends. One Descent into the Depths of Consciousness.

Each month, over one live weekend, we take one decisive step, from the first question to the deepest realization, and back into life. Every weekend combines teaching, dialogue, and intensive guided practice.

What is consciousness?

The felt sense of existence. We begin with the question itself: what is this experiencing presence you have carried your entire life? First practices of coming into direct contact with the simple, astonishing fact of being conscious.

What neuroscience, philosophy, and the encounter with artificial intelligence reveal: intelligence is doing; consciousness is being. Why machines can simulate everything except experience, and what that means for how you understand yourself.

The extraordinary human capacity to be conscious of being conscious. We learn to turn awareness back upon itself, the foundation of all self-knowledge and the doorway every contemplative tradition has pointed to.

Christ consciousness, Buddha consciousness, Atman consciousness. What the great traditions discovered when they explored consciousness from within, and what becomes visible when their maps are placed side by side. It is always the same water; only the tea that colors it differs.

Consciousness and the body: the subtle nervous system, the inner architecture through which awareness moves and deepens. Practices that awaken the felt, embodied dimensions of consciousness.

Who is the one who experiences? The relationship between consciousness and identity: what the self is, what it is made of, and what remains when consciousness is no longer confined to it.

The capacities that awaken as consciousness deepens: profound attention, presence, perception beyond thought, the ability to hold complexity without fragmenting. Capacities no machine can replicate, because they are expressions of trained awareness.

The summit of the journey: consciousness without object, without boundary. Intensive practice of expansion and classical meditation, guided into the states the mystics and scientists in our stories attempted to describe.

The return. What shifts in your work, your relationships, and your sense of meaning when consciousness becomes something you actively inhabit. Living as a conscious being in an artificial age

Minor refinements to sequencing may occur as the cohort begins; the arc and content of the nine months are set.

ENCOUNTERS WITH CONSCIOUSNESS

Stories of Consciousness

Across traditions, disciplines, and centuries, scientists, mystics, and seekers have touched the same boundless territory and tried to describe it.

"I ceased to exist in any recognizable way, shape, or form. No more ego, no more self — nothing personal remained. And yet something experienced. The remnant of my shattered mind perceived the sublime: the burning furnace of being."

Christof Koch

Neuroscientist · Allen Institute for Brain Science

"A rush of energy burst from my chest — an alive, overwhelming love whose source was unmistakably me. Then that light exploded, filled the room, and expanded to embrace the entire universe. I recognized, with immense surprise, that I was that light."

Federico Faggin

Inventor of the Microprocessor · Physicist

Contemplative  ·  Dissolution of Self

"One day, without drama or warning, I looked for the self — and it was simply not there. Not hidden, not transformed. Gone. What remained was so unexpectedly vast and still that I had no name for it."

Bernadette Roberts

Christian Contemplative · Author

"The man mending the road was myself. The stone he was breaking was part of me. The birds, the dust, the passing car — everything was in me, and I was in everything. Within myself was the calmness of the bottom of a deep, unfathomable lake."

Jiddu Krishnamurti

Philosopher · Teacher

Mystic  ·  Christian Contemplative Tradition

"The soul is carried away — and I could do nothing to resist it. I felt myself lifted, not by my own will, but by something immeasurably greater. In that moment the soul sees that it has become one flame with the divine fire."

St. Teresa of Ávila

Mystic · Doctor of the Church · 16th Century

Neurosurgeon · Near-Death Experience

"As a neurosurgeon, I had spent my career telling patients that near-death experiences were fantasies of a dying brain. Then my brain shut down completely — and I found myself more conscious, more alive, more real than I had ever been."

Eben Alexander

Neurosurgeon · Harvard Medical School

These are glimpses of a capacity that lives in every conscious being, including you. The question of this school is what becomes possible when that capacity is deliberately cultivated

The approach & the outcome

Two Halves of One Knowing

The school stands on two legs, in equal measure, and they do not stay apart. Understanding reaches into practice and changes its very nature.

Understanding

To grasp it

Each weekend opens with teaching and dialogue. Drawing on his research and his conversations with leading neuroscientists and philosophers of mind, Shai brings the clearest distinctions these fields offer into contact with the contemplative traditions and the questions raised by AI. These teachings are offered as a precise context for living, rather than as academic abstraction.

You come to know what consciousness is, and what it is made of, with a clarity no single discipline can give you: why AI lacks consciousness, in what precise sense you are conscious, and what that means for how you live and decide in the years ahead.

Experience

To live it

Consciousness cannot be understood from the outside. The heart of every weekend is practice: the Expansion Method, classical meditations reframed through the lens of consciousness, subtle body work, and guided explorations of awareness itself.

You gain the lived capacity to feel your own consciousness, to deepen it, expand it, and draw on its powers. The more conscious you are, the more alive you are: more present to yourself, to others, to nature, and to the dimension the mystics called sacred.

In spirituality, words like “consciousness” and “awareness” are often used loosely, as if they meant little more than mindfulness. Here the word is restored to its full depth: understood with rigor and known from within. This is what makes the practice unlike any meditation you have done before, even after years of practice. By the end, you will be conscious of being conscious, and you will know, from the inside, why that is the most interesting thing about being human.

Who this is for

This school is for those who sense there is more

Thinkers and practitioners

drawn to the intersection of philosophy, science, and inner life, who want depth rather than inspiration alone.

Coaches, therapists, and leaders

who work with consciousness and want to understand it from the inside out.

Seekers and spiritual practitioners

who are ready for philosophical clarity alongside experiential practice.

Those navigating a complex and rapidly changing world

who want to meet it from a stable, conscious center, rather than from reaction or overwhelm.

This is a school for those who want more than concepts about consciousness or a quick technique. It is a nine-month commitment to a living inquiry. If that is what you have been waiting for, you will know.

The Professional Dimension

Why this work transforms how you work with others

If you are a coach, therapist, leader, teacher, or healer, you already work with consciousness every day. You hold space for it. You read it in the room. You make decisions based on what you sense beneath what is being said.
What you have rarely been given is the faculty itself, understood with precision, and developed in yourself with care.

Perception sharpens.

You begin to recognize, in real time, the difference between a client's intelligence speaking and their consciousness speaking. You stop being misled by the performing mind, in them and in yourself.

Presence stops depleting you.

When you can locate your own consciousness deliberately, the depth of the work no longer drains you the way it once did, because you are no longer running it through your nervous system as effort.

Your interventions land deeper.

Every method you already use, whether somatic, cognitive, contemplative, or relational, draws on consciousness as its base. When that base is understood and trained, your existing methods begin to do something they could not do before.

This is the layer beneath every technique you have ever learned. It is what makes the technique work, or fail to work, in the room.

Voices from previous schools

What participants say

"Dr. Shai Tubali is one of the great master teachers of our generation. A brilliant mind, a pristine awakened consciousness, and a vastly loving heart enable him to decipher, transmit and induct the very soul of these wisdom teachings. To have the Grace to study alongside his transmission of these works is an initiatory process and a precious blessing. A true trustworthy resource for cultivating presence, peace and illumination."

Amy Elizabeth Fox
Chief Executive Officer, Mobius Executive Leadership

“For me, a new door has opened where I have more power and use my energy purposefully and not just waste it in emotions that I misunderstood before. At the same time, I can now accompany clients and friends on this path as well, to feel in and discover this inner wisdom that is in all of us.

At one point I asked myself: why didn’t I learn about this earlier? Why didn’t I do this much earlier? Because I think that’s the foundation to really understanding what it means to be human.”

Max Schwindt
Transformational Coach, Engineer

“Colleges and universities educate future economic and political leaders as well as future global team players. The demands on these groups are increasing, particularly concerning their physical resilience and emotional competence. Shai Tubali, with his teachings and methods, supports personality development processes that are both cognitively convincing and methodically accessible, especially for university students. Therefore, they should be incorporated into all curricula internationally.

Gabriele Thelen
Professor of Intercultural Communication, University of Konstanz

"If you’re looking for a program that nourishes, enlightens, and creates a lasting difference, I highly recommend one with Shai Tubali and his team. Shai’s presence, his processes and his enlightened answers to your questions will leave you feeling transformed. I’m so grateful Shai has chosen to share his wisdom and scholarly knowledge with us. His books, satsangs and courses are a great contribution to humanity."

Vivian Saffer
Coach and facilitator of the Work

"This school is a perfect blend of teaching, deep insights and transformational processes. It helps tremendously in understanding the superman power of consciousness, and making real shifts in being. I have never experienced anything like this before."

Nathalie Lenz
Transformational Coach

"This connectedness, from which I can draw at any time, is probably the most sacred thing I have realised. I react much more calmly and clearly when a storm breaks in from outside. Decisions are no longer based on offended ego, but in compassion and peace."

Guides for the journey

Shai Tubali, Ph.D.

Shai Tubali is a philosopher and researcher whose work circles one sustained question: what does it mean to be a human being, and what would it take to live that fully? He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Leeds, has spent more than three decades exploring consciousness through academic inquiry and direct practice, and is the author of over twenty books translated into more than thirteen languages.

His teachings live under The Human Practice, a structured field of philosophical inquiry and contemplative work dedicated to the full realization of human existence. At its center is the Expansion Method, developed over two decades and currently under clinical investigation at the University of Sussex: a structured way to come into direct contact with consciousness, the most essential and most neglected layer of human life. He writes for Big Think and teaches internationally.

Tamar Brosh, M.A.

Tamar Brosh has spent more than twenty years guiding people on healing and developmental journeys at the intersection of spirituality and psychology. She has facilitated thousands of sessions, expanding her clients' consciousness through trauma healing, emotional development, and spiritual growth. From this work, she has seen firsthand how an expanded consciousness changes everything: how decisions are made, how emotions are regulated, how creativity moves.

She serves as Transformational Faculty at Mobius Executive Leadership, the global leadership development firm working with senior leaders across business and the social sector. She holds a Master's in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching from the University of East London, and co-leads the professional certification in the Expansion Method for Trauma Release, a clinical adaptation of the method that has trained therapists, coaches, and somatic practitioners worldwide.

As co-creator and co-leader of the School of Consciousness, Tamar holds the experiential dimension of the training, the work of bringing consciousness into lived, felt reality.

Good to know

Questions & Answers

Why do I have to apply — can't I just enroll?

Because this is a nine-month journey lived in a shared field, the right group matters, for you and for everyone in it. The short application helps us make sure the school is a genuine fit. It takes only a few minutes, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and if it is right, you will receive a personal invitation to enroll and secure your place.

Do I need previous experience with meditation or with Shai's work?

No. The school is a complete journey in itself. Everything, from the first contact with consciousness to its deepest expansions, is built up step by step. Experienced practitioners will find new depth; newcomers will find a clear path.

What if I cannot attend a weekend live?

All sessions are recorded, and you will have access to every recording. We recommend attending live whenever possible, because the practices are most powerful in the shared field, and no weekend is ever lost.

Is this a scientific course or a contemplative one?

It is deliberately both. The school’s premise is that no single discipline can answer the question of consciousness. You will encounter neuroscience and philosophy with real rigor, and mystical traditions and practice with real depth. The school remains precise without becoming merely academic, and experiential without becoming vague.

Do I need to know anything about AI?

No. AI is the mirror that has made the question of consciousness urgent for everyone. It is the doorway into the school, while the subject is you.

How much time does it require between weekends?

One weekend per month, plus a recommended daily practice of roughly 20–30 minutes using the guided practices you receive. This practice is encouraged, though it is not obligatory.

I've attended a previous school with Shai. Is this mostly repetition, or still worth joining?

It is absolutely worth joining, and in a very specific way. This is the first school Shai has built entirely around consciousness itself, framed through neuroscience, philosophy, and the encounter with AI. That context is new, and it reaches directly into the practice. The same expansion and meditation work you may know is approached here through an entirely different lens, which alters what you are actually doing when you practice. Longtime students tend to find a deeper layer beneath familiar ground: the why underneath methods they thought they already understood.

Begin

Consciousness is our most precious human asset. We were simply never taught to discover its potential, or how to use it. These times are inviting us to change that.

That is what these nine months are for.

In nine months, you can know consciousness as more than a word. You can know it as the most vivid reality of your life. The school begins October 31, 2026.

Early bird until July 21 · Limited places · Applications reviewed on a rolling basis

P.S. Shai guides only one school each year, and this is the first devoted entirely to consciousness, the question at the heart of all his work. If it speaks to you, this is the year.
